Felicity Huffman appears as normal in the brand-new trailer for Ava DuVernay ’s When They See Us , her upcoming Netflix miniseries on the notorious Central Park Five case . It seemed up in the air how Netflix would treat Huffman’s role in the series now that she has pled guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in the college admissions scandal known as Operation Varsity Blues that has dominated national headlines since early March.
Huffman plays Linda Fairstein, the former Manhattan assistant district attorney and head of the sex crimes unit who presided over the case that saw five black teenagers wrongly incarcerated for the sexual assault of a woman jogging in Central Park in 1990. Fairstein’s conduct during the investigation was so objectionable, according to a dissenting opinion written by a judge in a 1993 appeal, that she seemed not “human.” All five men were fully exonerated in 2002, after more than 10 years in prison. (Fairstein has since made a successful career out of writing crime novels.)
Prosecutors are seeking a 10-month jail sentence for Huffman despite the guilty plea she made. It’s unclear whether any promotional events or screenings of When They See Us will be affected, or what Huffman’s participation will be. The movie also stars Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Famke Janssen, Niecy Nash, Reece Noi, Aunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury, and Storm Reid, and premieres on Netflix on May 31.
