With the release of the Beyoncé -executive produced album The Lion King: The Gift , Blue Ivy Carter has made her official studio singing debut on the cut “Brown Skin Girl.” Previously, Bey and JAY-Z ’s 7-year-old daughter has freestyled , spoken , and broken a Billboard record as a crying newborn on her parents' work, plus some candid behind-the-scenes singing on this year's Homecoming .
Blue begins and ends “Brown Skin Girl,” singing the intro with Saint Jhn and the outro by herself—and is also listed as one of the song’s writers.
The lyrics are a message from Bey to Blue Ivy and brown girls everywhere to embrace themselves. Also featuring WizKid, Bey’s second verse makes mention of Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, and Naomi Campbell: “Pose like a trophy when Naomis walk in/She need an Oscar for that pretty dark skin/Pretty like Lupita when the cameras close in/Drip broke the levee when my Kellys roll in.”
