Investors Who Bought Codexis (NASDAQ:CDXS) Shares Five Years Ago Are Now Up 1053%

Simply Wall St

For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. Don't believe it? Then look at the Codexis, Inc. ( NASDAQ:CDXS ) share price. It's 1053% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 15% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 8.5% in 90 days).

We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Given that Codexis didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last 5 years Codexis saw its revenue grow at 15% per year. That's a pretty good long term growth rate. Arguably it's more than reflected in the very strong share price gain of 63% a year over a half a decade. It might not be cheap but a (long-term) growth stock like this is usually well worth taking a closer look at.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Codexis shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 77% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 63% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
