US Market Indexes End Slightly Lower Friday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,995.95 on Friday with a loss of 5.97 points or -0.02%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,596.26 for a loss of 0.38 points or -0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,971.48 for a loss of 14.59 points or -0.21%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 18.21 for a loss of 1.29 points or -6.62%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 2.3%, the S&P 500 gained 2.4% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3.1%.

Year to date, the Dow Jones has gained 2.9%, the S&P 500 has gained 3.6% and the Nasdaq Composite has a gain of 5.1%.

Friday's market movers

U.S. market indexes retreated after a five-day rally to end slightly lower on Friday. Investors were awaiting the beginning of the fourth-quarter earnings season, which kicks off with the big banks reporting earnings next week. The government shutdown continued into its 21st day on Friday, tying a previous record under the Clinton administration. Reports from President Trump show he may sign a bill giving federal workers pay for time during the shutdown and also that he doesn't expect to declare a national emergency right now, but he does have the power to do so.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index decreased 0.1% in December and increased 1.9% annually.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count increased to 1,259 from 1,151.

  • Walgreens Boots Alliance ( WBA ) -1.13%
  • Microsoft ( MSFT ) -0.94%
  • Apple ( AAPL ) -0.92%

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,447.19 for a gain of 1.76 points or 0.12%. The S&P 600 closed at 902.03 for a gain of 2.60 points or 0.29%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,023.45 for a gain of 12.39 points or 0.14%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,154.42 for a gain of 16.37 points or 0.18%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,763.35 for a gain of 1.95 points or 0.11%; the S&P 100 at 1,149.30 for a loss of 0.17 points or -0.01%; the Russell 3000 at 1,531.78 for a loss of 0.06 points or -0.01%; the Russell 1000 at 1,436.91 for a loss of 0.19 points or -0.01%; the Wilshire 5000 at 26,853.37 for a loss of 0.36 points or -0.01%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 661.36 for a loss of 0.22 points or -0.03%.
